A little bit of red sunlight glows through dense wildfire smoke above a mountain ridge, symbolizing the fragile line between order and chaos.

A Little Bit of a Photography Lesson

The photograph I uploaded for today’s post wasn’t heavily edited. In fact, it looks almost exactly as it did that morning.

Normally, the rising sun is far too bright to photograph with this much detail. It blows out the highlights, blinds the lens, and leaves you with a washed-out white glare. But wildfire smoke scattered and filtered the light just enough that I could point my camera straight toward the horizon. Instead of a brilliant yellow orb, the sun appeared as a heavy, blood-red disk peeking over the mountains.

It’s a strange thing, finding a perfect composition in something that’s actively destructive. A little bit of smoke can create stunning photographs. It gives the atmosphere weight. It gives the light a texture you can almost feel.

But we all know how quickly the wind changes. Too much smoke means people stay indoors, air quality plummets, and entire communities face the threat of evacuation. The beauty vanishes, replaced by a choking gray reality.

We often hear that a little chaos fuels creativity, challenges assumptions, and keeps us from becoming complacent. We tell ourselves we need the mess to find the muse, that a cluttered desk is the badge of honor for a cluttered, and therefore interesting, mind.

Maybe.

Photography has taught me that beautiful conditions and dangerous conditions sometimes look remarkably similar.

The difficult question is the same one that opens the poem: How much is a little?
