I previously wrote and posted about my dream home. When I penned that poem, I dreamed of owning a bookstore that was more than just a source of income, it was a sanctuary where I worked and lived and shared imagination, knowledge and creativity with local patrons.
It was a place for community to gather, not only to read, but to engage with each other and with the arts. It had an open area for artists to display and sell their photography, painting, sculpture, or other creative pieces.
Above the buzz of my bookstore was a cozy dwelling, suggesting a seamless stairway between work and life—a place where I could dine, rest, socialize, and, importantly, continue to dream. The rooftop garden offered a serene retreat under night sky.
While the concept of owning and working in a bookstore may no longer align with my dreams, the essence of what it represents remains. Now, I imagine myself living in a neighborhood where I can easily stroll to a nearby diner, a corner grocery store, perhaps even a lively bookstore. where I can immerse myself in the rhythm of daily life without the constant reliance on a car.
I long to live in a place where people can congregate, converse, and connect without relying on the time and expense of a car.
My dream isn’t merely about convenience; it’s about reclaiming a lost sense of belonging. It’s about restoring meaningful connections within my community. I crave time to casually explore my surroundings on foot, where chance encounters with neighbors become a cherished part of my daily routine. This is my simple existence—to be able to engage with my surroundings in a more intimate and meaningful way, unencumbered by cars.
Living in a walkable neighborhood meets my deeper longing for a slower, more intentional way of life. I want to better savor moments of connection and camaraderie that arise organically in shared spaces. This vision speaks to my fundamental desire for community, accessibility, and a greater sense of belonging—a dream that transcends the specific setting of a bookstore or café to encompass a broader aspiration for a more fulfilling and harmonious urban existence.
Words are all I have; please give them life by sharing.
