Ethereal
Gold gleams
slice darkly
dappled clouds,
scattering flashy flecks
of violet, indigo, and blue.
The radiant hues
spray the valley gap,
starting at the tall mountain tops
down to the deepest point
where the rocky mounds meet.
I need a photograph
to preserve this moment
in my memory book,
but I am on the highway,
traveling,
the nearest off-ramp
miles away.
The scene softens,
colors blur,
before I can break
for a side-road snapshot.
Thus today’s summer sunrise
lives with other memories only
inside my mind.
Defining Ethereal:
“Ethereal” is a definition poem. Rather than giving a direct definition, it paints the feeling of something that is real yet untouchable. Like the summer sunrise described here, the idea of ethereal lives in a moment we cannot hold but only carry within our memories.
Lesson Plan in a Snap
Objective:
Students will write a poem to define key vocabulary using concrete snapshots and sensory details.
- Introduce the idea: A definition poem shows what a word feels like using concrete snapshots, not dictionary meanings.
- Pick a word: Students choose a word like hope, courage, joy, fear — or select from a short list you provide.
- Brainstorm images: In 3 minutes, students jot down quick sensory details, actions, or small moments that capture their word.
- Write the poem: Students create a short poem (6–12 lines) using vivid, concrete snapshots to define the feeling.
- Share or collect: Quick shares if time allows, or collect drafts to celebrate creativity over perfection.
