Every day’s a holiday
In unexpected ways,
It’s not about the parties,
Despite what some may say.
Every day’s a holiday,
In moments that we share,
Sharing laughter,
Sharing tears,
Knowing someone who cares.
Every day’s a holiday,
In snowstorms
And in the rain,
Warming acts of kindness
That ease the piercing pain.
Every day’s a holiday,
In the simple things we find,
The warmth of a smile,
The whispers of the mind.
We shape each day,
Let’s celebrate,
Yes, we can make it great.
Today’s right now,
So don’t put off
(‘Til tomorrow),
We cannot hesitate.
Every day sharing, caring,
Living, dreaming,
Every day loving, laughing,
Sharing, singing.
Every day’s a holiday,
Every day’s a holiday,
When I’m…
Every day sharing, caring,
Living, dreaming,
Every day loving, laughing,
Sharing, singing.
Every day’s a holiday,
Every day’s a holiday,
When I’m…
Writing a Power Ballad
This poem came from a very specific place in my imagination; I wanted to write something that felt like an ’80s power ballad. Not just the words, but the whole experience—soaring repetition, big emotion, and that soft build into a strong finish. I imagined lighters in the air, slow swaying, and a lead singer in shoulder pads belting the bridge with eyes closed.
The refrain “every day’s a holiday” anchors the piece the way a chorus would in a power ballad; it keeps returning, slightly reshaped by what surrounds it. I leaned into sincerity, into rhythm, and into the sense that even small, everyday moments can be worthy of celebration when we choose to see them that way. Whether it works as a song or a poem, I hope it leaves you with a little warmth and a little nostalgia.
What are your favorite power ballads? One that always takes me back to a specific moment in my life is Open Arms by Journey.
Writing Challenge: Song-Inspired Structure
Choose a song—any song—and write a poem using its structure or spirit.
Follow the rhythm, echo the chorus pattern, or ride the emotional wave it creates.
Your goal is not to parody, but to let the music guide the form.
Post your poem (or a link to it) in the comments.
