Patriotic are the poor in spirit,
for they shall see a nation rise
when all are lifted.

Patriotic are those who mourn,
for they shall shift sorrow
into justice.

Patriotic are the meek,
for they shall lead with wisdom,
not pride.

Patriotic are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness
,
for they shall build a land
where truth prevails.

Patriotic are the merciful,
for they shall heal
the wounds of division
.

Patriotic are the pure in heart,
for they shall serve with honor,
not greed.

Patriotic are the peacemakers,
for they shall weave unity
from discord.

Patriotic are those persecuted for righteousness,
for they shall stand unshaken,
shaping a better way.

My Version of Patriotism

Some people believe patriotism is measured by volume. The loudest voices claim the title while dismissing anyone who disagrees as enemies, traitors, or less American.

Patriotism does not have to be loud.

It looks like service. Listening. Volunteering. Building trust. Teaching. Planting trees whose shade you will never enjoy. Helping neighbors. Working through disagreements instead of widening them.

This page includes more than a poem. The links connect to organizations doing that work every day. They do not agree on every issue, but they share something: they invest time and energy in strengthening communities, encouraging participation, and helping people find common ground.

That is patriotism. Not because someone claims the title, but because they do the work.
