When I was five,
Stevie, Danny, and me
Met under the big tree
By Danny’s house.
Shovels in hand,
We began
Digging
A very, very,
Very big
Hole.

It wasn’t just any hole.
It was going to be
Our secret club
House.
A cool spot
Underground
Just for us
To hide and play
Day and night
For the rest
Of our lives.

Just when
The hole
Was about to get
Very, very big,
Danny’s mom
Stopped what
We were doing.
She handed us seeds
And showed us
How to turn the
Soil so we could
Plant those seeds.
Instead of a secret
Club house,
We started our
Very own
Vegetable garden.

By the end
Of a very, very,
Very long summer,
Our garden was full of
Tomatoes, carrots, and peas
Where our underground club
House
Was supposed to be,
For the rest
Of our lives,
But Stevie, Danny, and Me,
We had something
Cool and real
We made together.
And that was
Pretty neat.

I really hate talking about myself, but if I have to... I’m K.L. McDaniel, the person behind TheOtherKLM. I’m an introvert with extrovert moments, a fitness-minded person fighting later-age fat, and someone trying to keep life somewhat organized without pretending it isn’t a mess. Here, I write about the things I keep coming back to: movement, mental health, learning, self-awareness, and the strange little contradictions that make people interesting. I’m not here to act like I have everything figured out. I’m here to think through it, laugh when possible, and maybe find a little balance in the middle of the clutter. So, that’s me. More or less.
