Two Books
Two books line my shelves
standing as sentinels,
spines setting patterns:
To Kill a Mockingbird
&
Long Way Down
Mockingbird's pages carry
the weight of time,
Scout's world unravelling
in front of her young eyes,
glimpsing injustice's guilty
unkind grind.
Yet Reynolds' verse
beats Will's Long Way Down elevator's somber descent,
Echoing weight of
streets' cold crush.
Each line steps
to heartbeat's pace,
In space between
grief and pain.
Both stories
find classroom homes.
We discover truth
in Scout's crumbling world
and in Will's descent.
So side by side,
these two books,
on classroom shelves stand,
for in both tales,
we find our own.
In the pages'
empty spaces,
we discover
we are not alone.
