Wanting Skies
Clouds congregate
within wanting skies
Pondering
Planning
Promising
Comforting tears
for eager,
parched earth.
The Power of Brevity
Short poems leave room for readers to participate in the creative process. Instead of over-explaining every detail, brevity relies on suggestion. A few carefully chosen words can point toward an idea while leaving room for readers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to the page.
In a poem like Wanting Skies, my job isn’t to explain the moment. It’s to provide just enough pieces for your imagination to assemble the rest. You may picture a different horizon than the one I had in mind. That’s okay. In fact, that’s part of the creative process. If we arrive at the same feeling of anticipation and hope, the poem has done its job.
