Inspired by National Learn to Swim Day, which highlights the importance of water safety and accessibility, I reflect on my time coaching Adapted Aquatics and Adult Learn to Swim. I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound courage it takes to confront fear and discover the strength within oneself in the water. This poem, “Finally Kicking,” captures that universal journey of facing challenges, finding our footing, and ultimately moving towards freedom and confidence.
Finally Kicking
I’m learning
to kick
to survive,
legs pushing
water rising, falling
between each stroke.
I am facing fear,
finding breath
between frantic paces.
Air tasting
like citrus,
lungs infusing,
buoying weight.
I am becoming
light
bubbling,
moving
forward, upward,
sustained
by confidence.I now know
the water knows
my name, holding
my weight
whispering trust.
My arms stretching
skyward.
I am
anchor
and sail,
bounding free
in this drift.
USMS Supports Adult Learn to Swim
Did you know U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) actively supports Adult Learn to Swim (ALTS) programs nationwide? A significant portion of adults in the United States cannot swim proficiently. USMS offers resources, instructor certification, and even grants to help adults become water-safe. These programs cater to everyone from fearful beginners to those wanting to improve basic skills. Beyond the crucial aspect of safety, ALTS programs foster confidence, provide a great form of exercise, and can open doors to a lifelong love of swimming, potentially even leading participants to join the welcoming USMS community.Do you know someone interested in learning to swim as an adult? Adapted Aquatics: Breaking Barriers
My experience coaching Adapted Aquatics revealed the extraordinary capacity of individuals with diverse abilities to find joy and freedom in the water. Often facing unique physical or cognitive challenges, these swimmers demonstrate incredible resilience and a powerful connection with the aquatic environment. Adapted Aquatics programs are managed by dedicated instructors and organizations who tailor techniques and approaches to meet individual needs. The focus extends beyond basic survival skills to fostering independence, building self-esteem, and unlocking the therapeutic benefits of water. Witnessing the barriers melt away as someone discovers their own way to move and thrive in the water is a truly inspiring testament to the adaptability of the human spirit.
