Glass of ice water with lime slices on a wooden coaster was the inspiration for a lime-erick.
I drank daily eight glasses of water
Its bland flavor I needed to slaughter
I added some lime
It cost just a dime
And the flavorless water I altered

Okay. I get it. This one’s far from a masterpiece, but at least I narrowly met my goal of posting a poem each day for National Poetry Month. Maybe tomorrow’s work will be better.

A Twist of Lime

Limericks usually build toward a clever punchline, a bit of nonsense, or something mildly naughty. I intentionally went in the opposite direction. The poem escalates the problem, offers a simple solution, and ends with the thrilling news that the water was successfully altered.

The anticlimax is intentional.

Your Turn

My limerick builds up to the thrilling achievement of adding lime to water.

Can you top that?

Write a squeaky-clean limerick about a tiny triumph, a minor inconvenience, or an ordinary moment. Share it in the comments at the bottom of the page or leave a link to your work.
