Aphorisms

When I saw this prompt, I couldn’t help but think about the multitude of aphorisms about success. The short, punchy statements are meant to pack massive truth-bombs in just a few words, packaged with a pretty picture. The problem, however, is that all of these quick hits about success, no matter how good, often contradict one another.

There is no single path to success. There isn’t a single measurement for success. One person chases wealth while another seeks peace. One measures success by promotions, another by relationships, another by the freedom to spend an afternoon doing exactly what they want.

Advice is easy to give and even easier to repeat. We collect sayings from parents, teachers, coaches, books, podcasts, and social media posts. Some prove useful. Others fall apart under different circumstances. Most contain a grain of truth, but few contain the whole truth.

Perhaps that is why success remains such a slippery concept. The destination shifts depending on who is drawing the map. What looks like success from a distance may feel very different once you arrive.

What’s your top tip to be successful in life?

I really hate talking about myself, but if I have to... I’m K.L. McDaniel, the person behind TheOtherKLM. I’m an introvert with extrovert moments, a fitness-minded person fighting later-age fat, and someone trying to keep life somewhat organized without pretending it isn’t a mess. Here, I write about the things I keep coming back to: movement, mental health, learning, self-awareness, and the strange little contradictions that make people interesting. I’m not here to act like I have everything figured out. I’m here to think through it, laugh when possible, and maybe find a little balance in the middle of the clutter. So, that’s me. More or less.
