Shrinking Violet
I shrink into the shadows
To see if I can hide
I focus on the silence
The only peace inside
The world outside is screaming
But Iām a whispered sigh
I try to fade away
But still, I canāt deny
Iām a shrinking violet
My sweetest curse
In the garden of the unseen
Iām always feeling worse
You could call it strength
But it feels more like defeat
I will let you down
From my hidden seat
I wear this cloak of quiet
A burden and a shield
Full of hidden doubts
That never will be healed
Beneath the weight of whispers
My presence disappears
You see someone confident
Iām drowning in my fears
If I could step into the light
And cast this shroud away
Would I find a place
Where shadows dare not stay?
Or would the world be blinded
By the truth of who I am?
A shrinking violet, silent
In a world that doesnāt understand
So I linger in the corners
Where the light wonāt find me out
A flower in the darkness
Growing quietly in doubt
I am the unseen witness
To the noise and to the strife
A shrinking violetās story
In a loud and restless life
Iām a shrinking violet
My sweetest curse
In the garden of the unseen
Iām always feeling worse
You could call it strength
But it feels more like defeat
I will let you down
From my hidden seat
In the end, Iāll stay
In the shadows where I dwell
A shrinking violet, fading
In my own quiet hell
If I could start again
A different path to tread
Would I find my voice
Or remain here instead?
šŖ“ What Is a āShrinking Violetā?
Shrinking violetĀ is rooted in the 1800s, the phrase describing someone shy or modest. But violets arenāt weak. They endure harsh weather and return each year.
This poem reclaims the term: not as an insult, but as a complicated truth.
